The three new models of MD Walkman being released have attained extremely small size and light weight through the development of a new optical pickup that has fewer components and through further integration of electrical circuits. Furthermore, by developing a low power LSI using a new process, the world's longest battery life*3*5 has been achieved, allowing relatively little worry about battery exhaustion.

Also, adopting a high stiffness magnesium body made by the world's first ``Press Forging'' manufacturing method for the upper housing of MZ-R90 and the upper and lower housings of the MZ-E90 has provided light weight, strength and a high quality finish. Through these efforts, the MZ-R90 has achieved the world's smallest size and lightest weight*2 for a record/playback unit, which is about 78.9mm (width) x 17.3mm (thickness) x 72.0mm (depth) and about 105g (body only), and the world's longest playback and recording times, which are about 29 hours and 14.5 hours, respectively.

The MZ-E90 has attained the world's smallest size for a playback only unit, which is about 78.4mm (width) x 13.5mm (thickness) x 71.5mm (depth). The MZ-R91 has the same world record breaking playback and recording times, about 29 hours and 14.5 hours respectively, as the MZ-R90.

Also, all three models come equipped with the newly developed ``One Touch Eject'' mechanism. By sliding the open-button, the lid will open and the disc will pop out, improving ease of use by enabling easy disc changes. Furthermore, the MZ-R90 and MZ-R91 recorders come equipped with a ``Jog Lever'' on the main body that enables easy operation and editing as well as the world's first ``Name Bank'' function. The ``Name Bank'' function allows you to store within the unit up to 600 characters of words you use frequently in track names or disc titles.

Footnotes:

  1. Magnesium alloy is shaped by world's first press forging manufacturing method (patent pending) of Sony corp., Hitachi Kinzoku corp., Tokyo Seitankousyo corp. Compared with the die-cast method, stiffness is about 1.3 times greater, tensile strength is about 1.5 times greater, and extension strength(?) is about 2.5 times greater
  2. for a portable MD recorder, as of Aug. 24, 1999 (with respect to main body volume)
  3. for a portable MD player, when used with attached rechargeable battery and one alkaline AA dry cell battery, as of Aug. 24, 1999
  4. for a portable MD player, as of Aug. 24, 1999 (with respect to main body volume)
  5. for a portable MD player, when used with attached rechargeable battery and one alkaline AA dry cell battery, as of Aug. 24, 1999

Features common to all three models

  1. Small size and light weight realized through newly developed optical pickup

Through a newly developed optical pickup that has drastically reduced the number of components and an LFLGA* packaged IC that incorporates a 16 Mbit DRAM and integrates many electrical circuits to reduce PCB area, portables with dimensions nearly as small as an MD jacket have finally been achieved.

In particular, the optical pickup of MZ-R90 and MZ-R91 recorders has seen a substantial reduction in size and weight, having about 50% the frontal area and about 43% the weight of the current model's pickup.

*Low-profile Fine Pitch Land Grid Array

  2. Newly developed ``One Touch Eject'' mechanism makes disc changing easy

Sliding the open button on the front panel will pop open the unit's upper cabinet and eject the disc, making disc changes simple and easy. With a size small enough to fit easily in a breast pocket, disc changing is even more convenient.

Features common to MZ-R90 and MZ-R91 recorders

  1. World's longest record/playback time has been realized (as of Aug. 24 1999)

Due to a newly developed low power consuming LSI using a new process, and a low power consuming laser coupler optical pickup, power consumption of the electrical and control circuitry has been thoroughly reduced. Also, by increasing disc speed to about twice the RPM, data reading time has been shortened, which has contributed to a reduction of the period of motor rotation and as a result, to a reduction of power consumption. The result has been a portable MD recorder with the world's* longest playback (approx. 29 hr) and recording times (approx. 14.5 hr).

*for a portable MD recorder, when used with included rechargeable battery and one AA dry cell battery, as of Aug. 24 1999

  2. Multi-function ``Jog Lever'' on main unit enables easy operation and editing

The jog lever allows title search even while a disc is playing. It also simplifies titling of track or artist names. Various menu settings can be selected and set as with cellular phones. Ease of operation has been greatly improved even while achieving the world's smallest size.

  3. First portable MD recorder equipped with ``Name Bank'' function

Favorite artist names and frequently used title names can be registered in the RAM of the main unit. This convenient feature lets you recall and register words as needed. Previous models required all characters to be entered when titling, with the ``Name Bank'' feature registered words can be recalled and recorded easily whenever it is convenient. About 600 characters* at most can be registered.

*the number of words that can be registered varies according to the total number of registered characters.

  4. ``Smart Stick Controller'' with titling and editing functions

Entering disc names or track names and editing operations such as track move are possible with the remote controller. As titling is possible even while recording, recording time can be used effectively. Also, playback and AMS (``Automatic Music Search'', i.e. track search/skip) are possible just by clicking the head of the remote controller to the left or right. A wide backlit display that shows nine characters makes the remote controller very easy to use. Silver MZ-R90 equipped with silver-smoke color remote controller (black MZ-R90 respectively equipped with black-smoke remote). MZ-R91 is equipped with cool clear (translucent) remote controller.

  5. ``Joint Text'' feature records the titles from a CD while recording

By connecting a Sony CD Walkman*1 with Joint Text feature using the CD text connecting cable (option RK-TXT1)*2 and a separately available digital optical cable, title information can be copied simultaneously when recording from CDs with CD-text data on them*3.

    1. Only effective with CD Walkman models with ``Joint Text'' feature (D-E01 as of Aug 24, 1999).
    2. CD Text connection cable ``RK-TXT1'' exclusively for MD Walkman (option) MSRP 3,000yen (released Oct 10,1999).
    3. Only effective with CDs incorporating CD-text.

  6. Digital REC level control function

Sound level varies among CD's. Furthermore, CS/BS programs tend to have lower sound levels than CD's. This feature makes it possible to adjust the digital recording level and to eliminate differences in sound level on the final recording even when the audio sources have differing sound levels.

  7. Other features

    • Approx. 40 seconds of long duration shock resistant memory
    • Delightful choice of colors
    • Digital synchro REC function
    • Sampling rate converter that converts to 44.1kHz from 48kHz/44.1kHz/ 32kHz sources
    • Kana character input and display
    • Date-stamp function to record the year/month/day/time of recording.
    • MONO long recording mode making recordings up to 160 minutes (with 80 min. disc) possible
    • Editing functions such as track mark ON/OFF, one track erase, all erase, track move

Features of MZ-E90 player

  1. World's smallest* MD player body, employing a high stiffness magnesium casing (as of Aug 24, 1999)

Light and stiff magnesium is used for the upper and lower exterior housing of the main unit. This makes the body stiff and strong against twisting and reduces the weight of the main unit to about 70g while simultaneously achieving the world's smallest size for a playback unit*, having a width of about 78.4mm, thickness of about 13.5mm, and depth of about 71.5mm.

*for a portable MD player (considering main body volume), as of Aug.24 1999

  2. World's longest* battery life achieved, about 56 hours (as of Aug.24 1999)

Through a newly developed low power consuming LSI using a new process, and a low power consuming laser coupler optical pickup, power consumption of the electrical and control circuitry has been thoroughly reduced. Also, by increasing disc speed to about twice the RPM, data reading time has been shortened, which has contributed to a reduction of the period of motor rotation and as a result, to a reduction of power consumption. As a result, the world's longest playback time for a portable MD player/recorder, about 56 hours, when played with both attached rechargeable battery and a AA alkaline dry cell battery has been realized.

*for a portable MD player, when used with included rechargeable battery and one AA dry cell battery, as of Aug. 24 1999

  3. Popular new ``Smart Stick Controller'' type remote

Playback and AMS is possible just by clicking the head of the remote controller to left or right. Silver unit is equipped with silver remote controller. White and red units are equipped with cool clear (translucent) remote controller that adds fashionable taste to the visible part. A wide backlit display that shows nine characters makes the remote controller very easy to use.
